About
The Audacity of A Dream is an account of a boy, different from birth, who at the age of ten began to dream of a future that his circumstances defied. However, with grit and determination, he overcame the odds to realize his dream and made a difference in the process.
The young black boy lay on his back on the ground in the shade of a coconut tree at the foot of the little hill where his family’s house sat. His gaze seemed fixed on the expanse of the blue sky above, but as beautiful as the view was, he was not seeing it.
Instead, he was daydreaming that he was a lawyer. It was all that he could think about. He had been reading his father’s books, in particular, the one called The Merchant of Venice, and had admired the way Portia represented her father. He decided then that when he grew up, he would do as she did and be an advocate for the people.
However, his dream was greater than his circumstances. As he lay dreaming, the reality was that he was a ten-year-old boy from a little town that he could not even point to on a map, who went to school barefoot and did his homework by the light of an oil lamp, whose mother was a homemaker and his father, a fisherman. The potential for his dream to become a reality in anyone’s mind was nonexistent, but Tommy dared still to dream.
Life for young Tommy was not easy. He faced challenges from the very beginning, but he had an innate determination to overcome them. In this biography, you will learn about those challenges and how he overcame them, all because he dared to dream.
